Inglewood is a city in the southwestern portion of Greater Los Angeles, located just east of Los Angeles International Airport. The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans for centuries before Spanish settlers arrived in 1781 and established ranchos on which to raise their cattle. Southern California was later controlled by Mexico following their independence from Spain and eventually became part of the US as a result of the Mexican-American War. Inglewood’s first century under US jurisdiction was marked by periods of racial tension as former slaves from the south moved westward in search of opportunity. However, despite resistance from white Inglewood residents of the mid-20th century, African-American and later, Latino communities, began to develop and thrive throughout the second half of the 1900’s. Today, Inglewood has grown into a diverse, multicultural area of Los Angeles that is home to around 106,000 residents. It is also home to the SoFi Stadium, Where both the LA Rams and Chargers play, and in 2019, the LA Clippers announced a plan to construct a new stadium in Inglewood, where they will move in 2024.
